I did not attend this session on the particular day. based on my understanding about this session is we learned about what is memes and how it can be applied in class.
What is memes?
The meaning of meme was orginated from the Greek minema , ‘’something imitated”.
A meme is an idea that is passed on to one generation to the next generation.
This term is equivalent of a gene in the element of biological inheritance.
Meme was coined by Richard Dawkin 1976 in his book Selfish Gene.
Dawkins stated that humans have an adaptive mechanism whereby other
living things does not have.

In this session the lecturer taught is about how to use memes in class room
and what is the potential pitfalls of using it in classroom.
I got the notes from one of my friends.
How can memes be used in a classroom
1. It can be used as flashcards.
- mathematics formula or spellings can be put in the form of memes in flashcards.
These will make the students learn faster on what they are taught in class.
2. Reel the students back into a lesson
- every individuals has a short attention span.. In school or university we
are expected to learn a lesson up to two or three hours straight. Students might
get bored and lose focus. However , by using memes , student will fell enegetic
and will want to learn the lesson.
3. Introduce a new topic to the class.
- before class, the teachers could make memes and introduce them in lecture
Slides.. For example, what is the meaning of technology
4. Admonish/chide students or emphasize rules
- teacher can use memes as one of the method to gain students attention or in
A way discipline them.. For example if a student is not focusing in class or
Sleeping, the teacher could use their pictures as a meme
5. It can be used as an activity.
- teachers can give their students time to create their own memes.
6.Create rapport with the students and teacher.
- the usage of memes could create a good relationship because not many
Teachers would prefer to use memes in class.
7.It can be used as an icebreaker.
- during the of the semester in few classes most of the students would not
know each other. The teacher could take time to let students create their
own meme
8.Provoke a discussion within the class.
- during lessons , teacher could use memes created by students and give them a
chance to explain their meme
Potential pitfalls of using memes in a classroom.
1. It takes time and effort
-it will take time to find meme and it must be appropriate for the lesson
taught in class
2. All the students, or at least the majority of them, must understand the meme.
- the meme used in class must be general and understandable. Even if
the few people did not understand it would be just find to use the meme
3.It has to be relevant
- the meme used must be relevant to the module or the lesson taught. If it is not
related to it, then the usage of meme would be a waste.
Moreover , the teacher provides us few website that could be used to create memes:
Websites
1. www.livememe.com
2. www.quickmeme.com
3. http//:wigflip.com
Example of memes:
I find it the usage of meme is a good method to gain students attention. Sometimes , i use memes to gain motivation to study. Because i cannot focus on one particular task for to long. When my lectures use memes in class i feel more focused because we are not studying the whole session but also having some fun while learning.
As a future learner, I hope teachers will use more memes in their lesson and give us chance to create memes. Moreover , the teacher could give students reward for the best memes. This will encourage the students to create meme and learn the lesson in order to create the meme.
